By Zane Miller On Sunday, January 12th, 1969, the New York Jets of the American Football League defeated the Baltimore (now Indianapolis) Colts of the National Football League 16-7 in Super Bowl III to win the 49th championship in NFL history. It was the first (and, as of this writing, only) championship for the Jets franchise, the only one that they would win prior to joining the NFL, as Jets quarterback Joe Namath won the Super Bowl MVP Award. The game was held at the Orange Bowl in Miami. The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Minnesota Vikings 17-13 in the 1968 Playoff Bowl on Sunday, January 5th, 1969 to claim third place in the overall standings.
